Seeking Solitude in Way West Texas

Towards the end of 2019 we set out for a week in the middle of absolute no where along the Mexico / Texas border. Our residence for the week was an off the grid solar home about two hours outside of Marfa (near the border towns of Ruidosa and Candelaria). The nearest large town was Presidio, roughly 40 minutes away.

Our journey out to the AirBnB allowed us to enjoy Pinto Canyon road, an unpaved 4×4 route that takes about an hour and a half. There’s paved access from Presidio, but that’s not nearly as fun.

The property was home to a large family of cute and curious javelinas. They’re notoriously mean, but these guys seemed to have grown accustomed to humans, undoubtedly from the frequent AirBnB visitors.

A day after the first javelina came to visit, the entire family showed up.

The view from the property, looking out towards Mexico and the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range.

Took a drive out passed Candelaria, snaking along the border on FM170.
